In this position, you’ll be responsible for setting up and operating various machines used in the production of wood products. This may include saws, lathes, routers, and other types of equipment. Your role will be crucial in ensuring that work runs smoothly and efficiently, while maintaining high levels of quality control and safety standards. Strong attention to detail and technical knowledge of woodworking machinery is preferred for success in this role. You will have the opportunity to learn new numeracy and digital skills and improve your wood working skills.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities:<\/p>\n
Operate woodworking machinery and equipment to cut, shape, and form wooden parts and components.<\/p>\n
Set up and adjust machines to achieve the desired measurements and specifications.<\/p>\n
Inspect and measure finished products to ensure they meet quality standards.<\/p>\n
Perform routine maintenance on machines and troubleshoot issues that may arise during production with the support of the volunteer shop Manager.<\/p>\n
Follow safety procedures and protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.<\/p>\n
Communicate with the shop supervisor and other users of the shop to coordinate schedules, prepare materials and ensure timely completion of workshops and projects.<\/p>\n
Keep work area clean and organized, including properly storing tools and materials.<\/p>\n
Continuously seek to improve skills and knowledge in woodworking techniques and equipment operation.<\/p>\n
Open and close the shop on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
Use numeracy skills in the design and measurement of wood pieces for instruction and the making of wood craft.<\/p>\n
Prepare wood for upcoming workshops and for use by members.<\/p>\n
Provide assistance to Workshop Instructors in the teaching of woodworking or wood turning skills<\/p>\n
Assist workshop participants in learning basic wood working skills and assisting them in completing their projects<\/p>\n
Set up, program and operate our computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine using manufacture’s software to fabricate or repair a variety of wood items using digital cut files.<\/p>\n
Glue pieces of wood together or press and stick wood veneer to wood surfaces.<\/p>\n
Run preset special-purpose woodworking machines to make wood items.<\/p>\n
Read and interpret specifications or follow verbal instructions.<\/p>\n
May clean and lubricate equipment, and replace parts as necessary.<\/p>\n
Ensure the shop is kept neat and tidy and assist with regular cleaning of the shop.<\/p>\n
Assist in Intersections Open House events by setting up wood craft and art for display.<\/p>\n

Preferred Requirements:<\/p>\n
Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams and blueprints accurately.<\/p>\n
Proficiency in operating various woodworking machines such as saws, lathes, routers, and sanders.<\/p>\n
Knowledge of different types of wood and their characteristics.<\/p>\n
Familiarity with safety procedures and protocols when operating woodworking machinery.<\/p>\n
Physical dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate machinery with precision.<\/p>\n
Attention to detail and quality control to ensure finished products meet specifications.<\/p>\n
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve production goals and deadlines.<\/p>\n
Willingness to learn and follow instructions.<\/p>\n

Volunteer Shop Supervisor and our Instructors all have advanced wood working, wood turning and wood shop skills. The youth will have the opportunity to acquire basic and advanced numeracy and wood working skills to support their future career aspirations in carpentry, construction or other skilled trades.
