Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

 

The Works Department Operator is responsible for ensuring safety procedures and inspections comply with applicable legislation and are performed for all trucks and heavy machinery. They will also have the knowledge and experience to operate heavy equipment machinery.

 

KEY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Ensure trucks and heavy equipment machinery are inspected daily as required
  • Transport heavy equipment machinery with tractor & trailer
  • Drive snowplow during winter season
  • Perform road construction and maintenance
  • Transport materials and supplies to Works Department and job sites
  • Comply with applicable legislation including safe operating, carriage of goods, weights and dimensions, safely and securely, while maintaining an up-to-date driver’s log book
  • Assess breakdowns, i.e. flat tires and problem solve
  • Pre-trip & post-trip inspections of equipment daily
  • Communicate via CB radio to supervisor
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Education and Experience:

 

  • Grade 12 or G.E.D.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment machinery

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

 

 

  • Punctual, reliable and able to work with minimal supervision

 

Designations, Licences & Requirements:

 

  • Maintain a DZ driver’s license or working towards
  • Clean driver’s abstract
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate or willing to train
  • WHMIS Certificate or willing to train

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

  1. Physical Demands – Long periods of standing, sitting, crouching and/or bending will be involved throughout the course of work.   
  2. Environment – Periods of exposure to outside encountering adverse weather conditions, safety hazards and temperature extremes.     
  3. Mental Effort – Stress levels may be low to medium as situations may arise when dealing with the public.     
  4. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work – The hours of work may include evenings, weekends and stat holidays
