The Suicide Awareness Coordinator leads the planning, delivery, and evaluation of suicide prevention and awareness within the organization and the broader community. This role focuses on education, early identification of suicide risk, capacity-building, and collaboration with internal and external partners to promote safety, reduce stigma, and support help-seeking behaviours. It also focuses on improving the coordination and quality of mental health services within the community while promoting awareness through events and social media.
The Suicide Awareness Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting the mission and strategic vision of the organization by designing, implementing, and delivering educational programs and resources focused on promoting positive mental health and raising awareness of resources available to those dealing with thoughts of suicide.
This position involves creating and executing initiatives that align with corporate goals, fostering collaboration with internal and external parties, and contributing to development and expansion of community programs.
The role requires a high degree of professionalism, strategic thinking, and discretion in handling confidential financial, strategic, and programmatic matters.
The Suicide Awareness Coordinator will also serve as a key liaison with various service providers, businesses, schools, community organizations to advance mental health awareness and education across the region.
- 22.5 hours per week, with an 8-hour workday that includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Evening and weekend work will be required.
- Physical/Sensory Demands: Frequent driving, some teaching, and occasional lifting or carrying of awkward or heavy objects.
- Hazards: Work occurs in various settings, including offices, schools, community spaces, and outdoor locations.
KEY DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES
Program Planning and Coordination
- Plan, coordinate, and implement suicide awareness and prevention initiatives aligned with organizational strategy and community needs
- Develop annual work plans, timelines, and measurable objectives for suicide awareness activities
- Coordinate awareness campaigns (e.g., Suicide Prevention Month, World Suicide Prevention Day, etc.)
- Ensure initiatives are evidence-informed and consistent with national and provincial best practices
Education and Training
- Deliver suicide awareness and prevention training to staff, volunteers, and community partners
- Coordinate external training opportunities (e.g., ASIST, safeTALK)
- Adapt training content to meet the needs of diverse audiences, including youth, older adults, Indigenous communities, and frontline service providers
- Promote stigma-reduction and help-seeking messaging across all education activities
Community Engagement and Partnerships
- Build and maintain strong partnerships with community agencies, schools, health providers, Indigenous organizations, and crisis services
- Participate in local suicide prevention coalitions, committees, or working groups
- Support cross-sector collaboration to strengthen referral pathways and crisis response coordination
Policy, Procedures, and Organizational Support
- Support the development, implementation, and review of suicide prevention–related policies, procedures, and protocols
- Assist with organizational readiness related to suicide risk identification, response, and postvention
- Provide consultation and guidance to teams on suicide awareness and prevention best practices
Data Collection, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Collect and analyze data related to program participation, outcomes, and community reach
- Evaluate the effectiveness of suicide awareness initiatives and recommend improvements
- Prepare reports for leadership, funders, and community stakeholders
Equity, Cultural Safety, and Trauma-Informed Practice
- Integrate equity, diversity, inclusion, and cultural safety principles into all programming
- Support culturally appropriate suicide awareness approaches, including Indigenous-informed practices where applicable
- Apply trauma-informed principles to all interactions, training, and communications
Awareness Activities and Social Media
- Participate in and promote mental health awareness events.
- Manage and update social media platforms to engage the community and share mental health resources
- A competitive hourly wage ranging between $28.87 and $31.87 (5 step grid)
- Vacation of 4 weeks to start, 5 weeks at 5 years, 6 weeks at 10 years

- Minimum education of a 2-year diploma in applied health or social sciences (eg. SSW, MHAW, RPN)
- Minimum 3 years of recent experience in community development within human services, including a minimum of 1 year in the mental health sector.
- Understanding and sensitivity to the rights and needs of people with mental illness.
- Excellent communication skills, including advanced public speaking skills.
- Ability to develop dynamic training and presentations.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with a good sense of humor.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Capacity to learn and grow.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Advanced proficiency in using computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Corel, and Photoshop, Canva
- Skilled in using audiovisual equipment, including multimedia projectors.
- Familiarity with website management (WordPress), is preferred.
- A valid Canadian driver’s license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
- Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
- A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
