CLASSIFICATION: REGISTERED TECHNOLOGIST (MLT)
DEPARTMENT: LABORATORY
POSITION LOCATION: OWEN SOUND
UNION AFFILIATION: OPSEU – HPD
STATUS: FULL-TIME
WAGE RATE: $36.84 – $50.24

The Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) works within their scope of professional practice in a team environment to collect samples and is responsible for performing a variety of diagnostic tests on patient specimens, for analysing and interpreting test results and prepare reports to assist in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Responsible for ensuring quality patient care through continuous planning and uses clinical knowledge and skills to promote the delivery of optimal care to all patients. The MLT must be knowledgeable and practice in accordance with the Regulatory bodies including, CMLTO, Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH), and Hospital regulations and policies. In alignment with Brightshores strategic priorities, the MLT may participate in user groups and hospital-wide activities and programs and contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives as required.

Qualifications / Skills / Abilities:

Required

  • Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Degree College Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)
  • CSMLS Certification
  • Working knowledge of lab and hospital software systems as needed
  • Demonstrated excellent phlebotomy skills (all collection methods)
  • Ability to interact effectively with others within and outside of the organization (i.e. staff physicians, patients, suppliers, Ministry of Health)
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
  • Experience with large and small analyzers, dedicated instruments, calibrations and microscopes
  • Ability to perform Therapeutic Phlebotomy
  • Experience with Point of Care Testing
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment
  • Skills in leadership, problem solving, decision making and critical thinking
  • Ability to handle exposures to infection, noise, odours, working interruptions and high pressure situations
  • Commitment to continuous learning
  • Ability to be respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and standby, and ability for multi-site coverage when required
  • Recent satisfactory performance and attendance records

  • Advocates and supports a culture of patient safety and demonstrates an understanding of how the department service and assigned responsibilities contribute to overall patient safety at Brightshores through patient safety knowledge, skills and attitudes

Preferred

  • 2 years’ clinical experience in a Hospital Laboratory setting with experience in Core lab disciplines (Chemistry, Haematology and Transfusion Medicine)
