The City of Owen Sound is seeking a detail-oriented and customer-focused Finance Summer Student to support the Financial Services Department during the busy summer period. This position offers a valuable opportunity for a post-secondary student pursuing education in accounting, business administration, or a related field to gain practical experience in a municipal finance environment.
Reporting to Finance staff within the Revenue Division, the Finance Summer Student provides front-line customer service and assists with payment processing, data entry, and financial record maintenance. This role provides exposure to a broad range of municipal finance functions while supporting accurate financial reporting and delivering excellent public service. This posting is for a summer student position.
What You’ll Do
Customer Service & Revenue Support
- Provide professional, courteous customer service to members of the public in person, by phone, and electronically.
- Process all forms of payments and accurately enter transaction details into financial systems.
- Handle cash and other payment methods with a high degree of accuracy and accountability.
- Respond to inquiries related to revenue and payment services while maintaining confidentiality.
Financial Administration & Data Entry
- Accurately record financial transactions to support complete and reliable financial data.
- Assist with routine accounting and administrative tasks within the Revenue Division.
- Support Finance staff with day-to-day operational activities during peak periods.
- Ensure compliance with internal procedures and financial controls.
Organization & Team Support
- Maintain organized and accurate financial records and documentation.
- Assist with data entry tasks related to corporate projects.
- Communicate effectively with Finance staff and other departments as required.
- Manage assigned tasks efficiently while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
- Completion of a minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education in business administration, accounting, or a related field.
- Previous experience in an office or administrative setting is considered an asset.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact politely, tactfully, and professionally with the public.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when handling financial data and cash.
- Strong data‑entry skills and general knowledge of accounting practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and time‑management skills.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism.
- Knowledge of the City of Owen Sound is considered an asset.
Compensation & Benefits
- Wage: $20.00 per hour, 35 hours per week
- Benefits: OMERS defined benefit pension plan eligibility.
