The Family Support Worker is responsible for the provision of support, information, consultation, education and community development services to benefit family members of adults with serious mental illness.

 

KEY DUTIES – RESPONSIBILITIES

  • One-to-one and group peer support with family members who have a relative or loved one with mental illness
  • Support for family members or loved ones who have dealt with an immediate crisis situation with their loved one and can now benefit from education and peer support
  • Enhance family awareness and understanding of the mental health system and providing practical assistance and problem-solving in accessing needed services and “navigating” the mental health system
  • Facilitate and promote effective communication between family members and mental health service providers
  • Provide education for family/friends, service providers and other stakeholders regarding the rights and needs of family members
  • Develop educational resource materials, presentations and workshops for family/friends, service providers and the community
  • Participate in planning activities aimed at enhancing the local mental health system and increasing services for family members

 

Hours of work are 22.50 per week. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Working in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Some travel within the Grey-Bruce catchment area. Interactions with family of clients in crisis

Mild to moderate physical activity (occasional lifting objects under 35 lbs.)

What you will bring

  • College diploma in applied health or social sciences with content relating directly to community mental health and addiction services or significant directly related experience
  • Lived experience as a family member who is supporting a loved one with mental illness and/or addictions and a willingness to share their experiential knowledge with others
  • Experience working with families and/or people with serious mental illness and addictions
  • Experience with self-help/support groups either as a leader or participant
  • Peer Support Training is an asset
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) Training is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with family members and with professionals
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing skills
  • Good judgement and problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of major mental illnesses and their impact on individuals and families
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the rights and needs of people with mental illness and addiction
  • Awareness of mental health and addiction services, and resources within Grey/Bruce County
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Strong understanding and knowledge of the Recovery Philosophy
  • Knowledge of psychiatry, DSM V and the Ontario Mental Health Act
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
  • Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
  • A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
