Job Description
Looking for a summer job where you actually use your brain (and tech skills)?
If you’re into data, trends, research, or even AI tools like ChatGPT, this could be a great fit.
SEDC is hiring a Data & Research Assistant to help us better understand what’s happening in our local economy—and support small businesses and communities across Grey, Bruce, and Wellington Counties.
What You’ll Be Doing
You won’t be stuck doing busywork—this role is hands-on and meaningful:
- Use AI tools to help gather, organize, and analyze data
- Research economic and demographic trends in our region
- Build datasets on things like jobs, businesses, and population changes
- Use Excel (and other tools) to spot trends and insights
- Turn your findings into short, easy-to-understand reports
- Create visuals like charts, infographics, and presentations (hello Canva!)
- Work alongside our team to support real economic development projects
What We’re Looking For
You don’t need to know everything—we’re more interested in your curiosity and willingness to learn:
- Comfortable using Excel (or willing to learn quickly)
- Interested in data, research, or problem-solving
- Familiar with Canva or design tools (a bonus, not a must)
- Curious about AI tools and how they can be used in real work
- Strong communication skills—you can explain things clearly
- Organized and able to work independently and with a team
- Knowledge of Grey, Bruce, or Wellington Counties is a bonus
What You’ll Gain
This isn’t just a summer job—you’ll build skills that employers are actually looking for:
- Adaptability – Learn new tools and adjust to real-world projects
- Collaboration – Work with a supportive, experienced team
- Communication – Turn complex data into clear insights
- Creativity & Innovation – Find new ways to present and use data
- Digital Skills – Use AI tools, Excel, and design platforms
- Numeracy – Work with real data and trends
- Problem-Solving – Help answer real questions facing local communities
- Technical Skills – Gain hands-on experience you can put on your resume
Eligibility (Canada Summer Jobs)
To apply, you must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
