Job Description

We are looking for 2 summer students to assist our senior recreation staff with social events and engagement of supported individuals both on-site and within the community. This position will largely consist of engagement with individuals with varying levels of mental and physical capabilities. The ideal applicant will enjoy making others smile and helping bring fulfilment to individuals with disabilities.

The anticipated duration of this position is for 8 weeks with the potential for extension.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a student returning to school at the end of summer.
  • Must be comfortable with standing for long periods, bending/twisting, and lifting up to 20lbs.
  • Ability to present a passing Vulnerable Sector Screening.

Responsibilities:

  • 1. Provide therapeutic recreational services in accordance with each supported individuals assessments and individualized support plan ensuring that supported individuals are given the opportunity to participate in age appropriate, social, creative, spiritual, educational, cultural/ethnic service activities, thereby enhancing their quality of life
  • 2. Assists in planning and implementing special events which serve to educate and benefit supported individuals, personnel, and the local community’s awareness of PLGB’s programs and services
  • 3. Completes and dates required reports, forms, evaluations, studies, etc., and enters information in records, reports, and other required documents in a clear, concise, and timely manner.
  • 4. Attends and participates in various committees as assigned.
  • 5. Attends, participates in, and completes all mandatory in-service education/training as required
  • 6. Participates in the orientation and/or training of new and/or current employees
  • 7. Plans, coordinates and conducts (or arranges for) ongoing individual and group activities, including, but not limited to, parties, games, movies, crafts, and projects, etc.
  • 8. Transports and accompanies individuals to medical, dental, and related appointment
  • 9. Physical Development and Health e.g. Hydrotherapy, physio etc
  • 10. Sensory-motor Development e.g snoezelen , development programming etc
  • 11. Behavioural Management
  • 12. Promotes and provides assistance to the social, pastoral and community programs compatible to the individual’s interest & abilities, within both, the facility and in the community.
  • 13. Promotes program maintenance among members of the multi-disciplinary team, including family members participation and involvement.
  • 14. Plans, organizes, directs, evaluates and monitors the implementation of programs based on present needs of individuals, groups and facility. In consultation with resident/ family completes departmental (activity/social/spiritual) admission assessments
  • 15. Establishes and maintains effective communication and documents all relevant information with respect to supported individuals goals, participation and performance between the multi-disciplinary team (supported individuals, families, students, volunteers and external agencies)
  • 16. Assists in the development and maintenance of Individual Support plans
  • 17. Knowledge of QAM requirements of funding ministries and ensures indicators are being met
  • 18. Assists in the development and distribution of monthly Activity Calendar of events.
  • 19. Advocates for the supported individuals to ensure activity programming needs are resident-focused by working within the determined residents’ physical, mental, and social limitations and by ensuring supervision, safety and protection of residents during programs both, on -site and away from facility.
  • 20. Support residential care team to ensure daily needs of supported individuals are being met.
  • 21. Assist with feeding, bathing and ADL’s of supported individuals as required.
