The City of Owen Sound is seeking a motivated and customer-focused IT Help Desk Analyst Summer Student to join the Information Technology team. This role provides an excellent opportunity for a post-secondary student pursuing education in information technology or a related field to gain hands-on municipal IT experience.
Reporting to senior IT staff, the Help Desk Analyst Summer Student acts as the first point of contact for City staff requiring technical assistance. The position focuses on Level 1 technical support, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and delivering responsive, professional customer service while escalating more complex problems as required. This posting is for a summer student position.
What You’ll Do
Help Desk & Technical Support
- Act as the primary point of contact for IT-related inquiries via phone, email, and in person.
- Receive, log, prioritize, and manage help desk requests from internal staff.
- Provide end-to-end ownership of Level 1 incidents, including issue identification, investigation, and resolution.
- Escalate Level 2 issues to senior IT staff as appropriate.
- Create a positive staff support experience through clear communication, timely follow-up, and professional service delivery.
Hardware, Software & Systems Support
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues related to computers, printers, mobile devices, and peripherals.
- Support software applications including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Great Plains, Work Manager, and Amanda.
- Assist with Active Directory account support and basic system administration tasks.
- Use diagnostic tools and established procedures to resolve technical issues efficiently.
Asset, Telecom & Systems Support
- Assist with managing and maintaining the City’s inventory of IT assets and mobile devices.
- Support basic website maintenance and telecom-related services.
- Track and analyze help desk requests to identify trends and recurring issues.
Organization & Team Support
- Plan, organize, and manage assigned daily tasks while balancing multiple priorities.
- Work collaboratively with IT staff to support departmental and corporate initiatives.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
- Secondary school diploma and currently enrolled in, or working toward, a college or university degree in Information Technology or a related field.
- A combination of education and related experience satisfactory to the employer will be considered.
Skills & Competencies
- Basic knowledge of ITIL principles and help desk ticketing systems.
- Technical knowledge of client hardware (desktops, laptops, mobile devices, printers, peripherals).
- Familiarity with operating systems and platforms, including Windows, Android, iOS, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Understanding of diagnostic processes and troubleshooting methodologies.
- Knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, and PowerShell scripting is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to explain technical concepts in clear, user-friendly language.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective time‑management and organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Wage: $20.00 per hour, 35 hours per week
- Benefits: OMERS defined benefit pension plan eligibility.
