The City of Owen Sound is seeking enthusiastic and reliable Seasonal Parks & Open Space Attendants to support maintenance operations across our parks, trails, cemetery, downtown core, ball diamonds, and other open spaces. Reporting to the Parks and Open Space Supervisor, these positions play a vital role in keeping our outdoor spaces safe, clean, attractive, and welcoming for residents and visitors.
This role includes a variety of hands-on maintenance duties and involves both independent tasks and teamwork. A strong work ethic and commitment to high-quality service are essential. This posting is for existing vacancies for a temporary seasonal position.
What You’ll Do
Sports Field Crew
The Sports Field Crew staff are responsible for maintaining the sports fields throughout the City. Duties include operating a half-ton pickup truck and a tractor, dragging and lining ball diamonds, lining soccer fields, and general maintenance of our parks.
Maintenance Crew
The maintenance crew helps keep our washrooms and facilities clean and safe. Staff are responsible for maintaining approximately 20+ seasonal facilities throughout the City. Duties include operating a half-ton pickup truck, cleaning, stocking, performing minor repairs, and general maintenance and upkeep of City buildings.
Campground Crew
Staff are responsible for maintaining the Harrison Park and Kelso Beach Campgrounds. Duties include operation of a half-ton pick-up truck, utility vehicle, golf cart, riding mower, push mower, trimmer, garbage collection, washroom cleaning and general maintenance. Office duties include registration, administration, handling of financial transactions and public inquiries.
Park General Crew
On this crew, you travel throughout City’s streets, parks and waterfront, emptying garbage bins and collecting litter. Duties include operation of a 2-ton Refuse Truck, emptying barrels in our Parks, Tourist Camps, main streets, and harbours, and delivering waste to the Landfill Site.
On this crew, staff are also responsible for assisting with playground and trail inspections/maintenance, as well as mowing wide-area grass.
Horticulture Crew
This crew is responsible for maintaining approximately 60+ gardens and passive parks throughout Scenic Owen Sound. Duties include operating a ¾-ton pickup truck, planting, watering, weeding, and general maintenance.
Turf Crew
The Grass Crews are responsible for cutting and maintaining grass in our 200+ acres of green space. Duties include operating ¾ ton pick-up truck with trailer, tractor, riding mower, trimmers and push mowers.
What We’re Looking For
Education & Experience
- Previous experience in custodial work or grounds maintenance (assets)
Skills & Competencies
- Valid Ontario Class G driver’s licence with a clean abstract.
- Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals (training provided).
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and problem-solve on the job.
- Safe operation of landscaping and groundskeeping tools, including:
- Zero-turn mowers, push mowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers
- Compact tractors and landscape equipment
- Portable generators, tillers, sod lifters, and hand tools
Other Requirements
- Ability to work a rotating schedule, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends
- DZ licence considered an asset
Compensation & Benefits
- Wage: $24.14/hour (April 1, 2026 rate) plus shift premium for evenings and weekends.
- Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Benefits: Comprehensive employer-paid Extended Health & Dental plan (after the completion of the probationary period), and OMERS defined benefit pension plan.
