JUSTICE

COMMUNITY JUSTICE OVERVIEW

For over 15 years, the Owen Sound and Area Family YMCA, in their effort to build strong communities, has provided a variety of community justice programs to youth and adults throughout Grey and Bruce counties.

Community justice provides a voice to the community and works with the police and courts to hold offenders accountable for their actions. Community justice strives to assist offenders in the reintegration process by increasing community involvement and strengthening community ties in an attempt to reduce future criminal behaviour.

It is recognized that a community based approach is often the most appropriate response to minor crimes. Alternatives to traditional sentences provide an opportunity for offenders to take responsibility for their actions while attempting to repair harms incurred by the victims and the community. Programs such as Community Service Orders, Crime Prevention and Anger Management workshops, Youth Justice Circles, Extrajudicial Measures and Extrajudicial Sanctions provide unique opportunities for offenders to be held accountable for their actions.

With the support of several local and provincial partners including the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, Ministry of the Attorney General, police services, volunteers and other community members, the Family YMCA strives to address the needs of those affected by crime.
